Getting started as a soccer referee in California is easier than you might think.
Step 1: Meet the Eligibility Requirements
Referees can be certified at age 13 or older. No previous officiating experience is required.
Step 2: Register with U.S. Soccer
Create an account through the U.S. Soccer Learning Center HERE and complete the required registration process for new referees. Complete the required U.S. Soccer Entry-Level Referee Course, which covers the Laws of the Game, match management, player safety, and referee responsibilities. Referees who are 18 years of age or older must complete a background check as required by U.S. Soccer and California State Referee Committee guidelines. Adult referees must complete SafeSport training to help ensure a safe environment for all participants. Once all requirements are completed, you’ll be certified as a U.S. Soccer referee and eligible to officiate matches throughout California.
