Getting started as a soccer referee in California is easier than you might think.
Step 1: Meet the Eligibility Requirements
Most new referees can begin certification at age 13 or older. No previous officiating experience is required.
Step 2: Register with U.S. Soccer
Create an account through the U.S. Soccer Learning Center and complete the required registration process for new referees.
Step 3: Complete the Online Training
Complete the required U.S. Soccer Entry-Level Referee Course, which covers the Laws of the Game, match management, player safety, and referee responsibilities.
Step 4: Complete the Background SCreening (18+)
Referees who are 18 years of age or older must complete a background check as required by U.S. Soccer and California State Referee Committee guidelines.
Step 5: Complete the SafeSport Training (18+)
Adult referees must complete SafeSport training to help ensure a safe environment for all participants.
Step 6: Receive Your Certification
Once all requirements are completed, you’ll be certified as a U.S. Soccer referee and eligible to officiate matches throughout California.
Step 7: Join the SoCal Referee Academy
This is where your real development begins. Academy members receive mentorship, match assignments, continuing education, field training, and support to help them grow into confident and successful referees.
Step 8: Start Officiating Games
Begin working youth matches, gaining experience, earning income, and developing valuable leadership skills while staying connected to the game you love.
